A candidate’s resume typically gets a 15-second glance, if it is reviewed at all. The surveyed employers heavily criticized generic resumes as a worthless effort.

Many resumes are never even seen by human eyes. An electronic computer scans it, looking for keywords. Without including the right buzzwords so the electronic scanners will pull your resume out, no one will see it.

Here’s what surveyed employers say they look for in a resume:

• it is targeted to the specific requirements in the job
• it states accomplishments and past performance results
• it contains a summary of qualifications section
• there are no lies or seriously exaggerated claims
• dates of employment are accurate and there aren't too many short duration jobs
• it is well-written and easy to read
