Let’s pretend you are the hiring manager with a stack of resumes in front of you. You need to hire a good person for the job. Your boss is watching to see how well you perform this hiring task. What catches you attention? What influences you to call in someone for an interview?

Recently I was assisting an employer with the hiring process and reviewed many resumes. I couldn’t help but be concerned that so many people are not having any job search success because they are using a very poor resume to represent themselves to potential employers. A poor resume drags out your search for new employment because it doesn’t get you interviews.

A candidate’s resume typically gets a 15-second glance, if it is reviewed at all. According to my survey of 600 hiring managers, employers complain that they receive thousands of resumes that are just dull job descriptions, but candidates fail to list any kind of results achieved on the job. The surveyed employers heavily criticized generic resumes as a worthless effort.

Many resumes are never even seen by human eyes. An electronic computer scans it, looking for keywords. Without including the right buzzwords so the electronic scanners will pull your resume out, no one will see it.

Here’s what surveyed employers say they look for in a resume:

  • it is targeted to the specific requirements in the job
  • it states accomplishments and past performance results
  • it contains a summary of qualifications section
  • there are no lies or seriously exaggerated claims
  • dates of employment are accurate and there aren't too many short duration jobs
  • it is well-written and easy to read

Now considering this, would your resume get picked from the stack? Would you get the call to come in for the interview?  (To see if your resume can standup to secrutiny take our resume assessment quiz)

Being able to capture your strengths and write about your accomplishments so that employers immediately take notice is an art –- one that I have perfected through years of working in the hiring field. Interpreting your actions and uncovering your accomplishments is part of my expertise and I can help you to create a resume that captures employers’ attention. Also, my ability to overcome concern about work gaps, or too many short duration jobs, can keep you from being immediately eliminated. I can help represent you to employers in the best possible light.

My resume and cover letter consulting program is a lengthy process, running a total of three-to-five hours. I’ll identify your strengths and most marketable experiences. I will quantify the specific results you have achieved, based on your previous experience, and your current goals, then craft them into a standout resume that will get noticed. I can assure you that your resume, the most important marketing tool you have in your job search portfolio, is focused, targeted, and designed to the exacting standards desired by hiring managers and human resource professionals. To arrange for your appointment simply call my office so we can get started on marketing you appropriately so you can snag the interviews you really want and land your dream job.

Did you know that employers expect, want, and actually stop to read well-written cover letters? Or, that a great letter on its own can help you secure an interview? Resumes must have a cover letter –- it’s a tactic to capture attention now that many people don’t write these letters anymore. BIG MISTAKE! They are the first thing a prospective employer will read.
